How We Work

Structured Insurance Advice Built Around Your Life.

At MeritLife, we do not treat insurance as a one-off product decision. Through the ProtectU Plan, we provide structured insurance advice that helps you understand your risks, review your existing cover, assess your needs and make informed protection decisions.

Our role is to provide advice, clarity and guidance. MeritLife is not an insurer and does not issue insurance policies.

A clear advice process for individuals, families, professionals and business owners.

Our Approach

Strategic Advice Before Product Selection

Good insurance advice is not about finding the biggest benefit amount or the lowest premium. It is about understanding what protection may be appropriate for your circumstances.

Insurance advice should start with understanding your life, not selecting a policy. A proper insurance strategy may consider your income, debts, family responsibilities, business interests, existing cover, cash flow, ownership structure and long-term goals.

That is why every personal insurance review begins with your circumstances. We look at what you are protecting, who depends on you, what financial commitments you have, and how illness, injury, disability or death may affect your plans.

Where relevant, we also review insurance held through superannuation and consider how it fits with any cover held outside super.

The ProtectU Plan

A Clear Process for Personal Insurance Advice

The ProtectU Plan is MeritLife's structured advice process. It helps you review your current position, understand your protection needs and make informed decisions with the support of a specialist adviser.

  1. 01
    Step 1

    Understand Your Situation

We begin by learning about your income, employment structure, mortgage, debts, household expenses, family responsibilities, superannuation arrangements and existing insurance cover. For business owners, we may also consider business interests, ownership structure and key financial obligations.

  2. 02
    Step 2

    Identify Risks and Gaps

We complete an insurance needs analysis to assess where risks, gaps, overlaps or inefficiencies may exist. This may include reviewing whether your current cover amount, ownership structure, beneficiaries, waiting periods, benefit periods or insurance inside super remain appropriate.

  3. 03
    Step 3

    Design Your Insurance Strategy

After reviewing your needs, we prepare a tailored protection strategy based on your circumstances, objectives and financial responsibilities. This may consider life insurance, income protection, total and permanent disability cover, trauma cover or business-related protection where relevant.

  4. 04
    Step 4

    Explain Your Recommendation Clearly

We explain the advice in plain English so you understand what is being recommended, why it is being recommended, what alternatives were considered, what it may cost and what trade-offs may apply. Where personal advice is provided, recommendations are documented in a Statement of Advice.

  5. 05
    Step 5

    Support Implementation

If you choose to proceed, we help guide the application and implementation process. This may include assisting with application forms, coordinating underwriting requirements, liaising with insurers and explaining outcomes such as exclusions, loadings or policy adjustments.

Ongoing Advice

Your Protection Should Evolve as Life Changes

Insurance advice should not stop once cover is arranged. Your needs may change as your income, debts, family, business or financial position changes. A regular insurance review can help assess whether your protection strategy remains relevant over time.

When a Review May Be Important

A review may be useful after major life or financial changes, including buying a home, increasing debt, starting or growing a family, becoming self-employed, restructuring a business, changing income or reviewing superannuation arrangements.

Support at Claim Time

If you or your family need to make a claim, MeritLife can help explain claim requirements, assist with documentation, liaise with insurers and support communication throughout the process.

Our role is to provide clarity, structure and support before, during and after important insurance decisions.
